Smart watches. Let's talk about em.

Might be a silly question, you fellows with the GPS watches, can you get by with a smaller face? What's considered small? Big? Have a Traser tritium but the large face seems to catch on everything. Only thing holding me back is fearing getting a smaller face and not being able to see it or getting a large face and having it catch on gloves, sleeves, etc. Haven't been thru the thread so if there's redundancy, I apologize.

You probably just need to go find a few models in person and decide for yourself. Depends on your eyesight, what information you want to be able to see on the face, and your personal standard of how much catching on clothing is acceptable. I’ve worn the instinct every day for more than 4 years now and other than when it’s really cold and the watch is sort of stuck under layers or if I have a dress shirt with tight cuffs (in which case I don’t really need the instinct anyway) I haven’t minded it at all.

So I had to move to an HMO to avoid insane health care costs. So now they want to track my steps since I'm a fat middle age man. I was hoping they would give me one. But they didn't. So Instinct 2 it is. Figured might as well get a GPS option. Ordered it tonight. You guys had good reviews. I didn't pay extra for the solar option. If I replace it in a few years and like it, I will consider more options.
If they are making you track and you’re paying for the watch it will be a tax deduction for next year as a healthcare expense. Save that receipt!

You guys run a screen protector on the face? I see you can get a pack for less than 10$. Seems like some cheap insurance if they work. Thoughts?

I haven't managed to scratch my fitbit yet FWIW. I bang it on stuff pretty regularly lol

I got a Garmin Instinct for Christmas. On paper having the GPS feature is nice, but I've yet to use it.

It's still a super nice watch and I like that I can set it to a vibrate alarm and not wake my wife up.

Also like the find my phone feature, never had that before and it comes in handy especially with kids.

The HR, sleep, and other stuff is interesting curiousity, but I can't say it's really useful for anything.

Also been trying to use my phone less compulsively. Weird as that sounds sometimes I'll start scrolling on it for no purpose whatsoever, just a complete waste of time. Honestly I think having a watch and not looking at my phone for the time helps with that. The only notifications I get also are calls which is nice because I can screen them without having to dig my phone out of my pocket.

I read through this thread awhile ago feeling very good about the fact that I spent very little money on a watch, and scoffed at the notion of paying a ton of money for a watch that didn't do a whole lot. Well, karma has since struck that arrogance out of me. I went and bought a Garmin Instinct after reading all the rave reviews on here. Yet again the saddlehunter effect has gotten me.

RTR!!!!

I've got a Garmin 5X. Also the Garmin scale. My watch face give me wind direction for my hunting location. The scale is synced to the app. It keeps me honest. I lost 20 pounds from diet and weighing myself every day. I'll probably upgrade the watch someday but I don't see switching away from Garmin.

Well , I just picked up the 2x Solar by Garmin. Looking forward to learning and using it this fall and beyond. Anyone have any follow-up advice?
There are a few useful functions in my opinion. 1. It’s a limited smart watch. I can’t answer the phone with mine, etc. which I like 2. You can get notifications on your watch for texts and the like and decide if you want to grab your phone. 3. Has sunrise and sunset times, which is useful for me for hunting. 4. Has a save your location function which is useful getting back to my truck on hunting/fishing trips 5. Has a compass. 6. Tracks steps and workouts 7. Tracks heart rate. 8. Has find your phone feature.

These are what I use most often.

Does it track sleep too?

Just want to say. I'm impressed with this watch. It's super light weight. I didn't know if I wanted the 45mm face over the 40. But honestly it wears so small that I wouldn't want the 40. The band is comfortable. Kinda stretchy but not in a cheap way. I had in my mind it was going to wear like a normal watch. But definitely does not. Even if I didn't need the step counter, I would lobby to spend a few more dollars for it if you can swing it. I can be a little bit of a sensory guy when it comes to things on me. But this barely moves the needle.

I’m too lazy to reread everything. Which watch did you go with?
