Helium Stick Modification - a closer look

No offense taken!

I am only good at knots I use on a regular basis.

When I need to make good knots the right way (especially life saving knots), I just refer to the phone app I mentioned.

FYI...it also has fishing and camping related knots.

Great! Thats a load off bud. These guys had me feeling like a piece of......dung.
Thanks for letting me off the hook.

Thanks for the info on the app.
Except for the main rescue knots and main camping knots....I forget how to tie knots too over time. No telling how many I have forgot! Lol.
Have a great weekend!

Girls, girls your both pretty. Hopefully nobody takes offense to that, just a joke in my house. Remember Red puts a lot time in this forum because of his love of saddle hunting and doesn't need to be put in the middle of anything. Red has family, work, and enough other things to stress about. We're all adults and don't need referees. Unfortunately nobody can hear the tone of a voice or see facial expressions on computers, forums, etc. Sometimes things get twisted and taken out of content. Everyone has to be careful of what is said in this politically correct world. It's definitely a different world than when I grew up and where I'm from. But you can't stop change. Maybe Red can delete some, we can forget it, and move on. We're just a bunch of people hunting differently than the rest and we're spread across the country and I think into Canada. So this forum gives us a chance to discuss and learn from each other. I know I have learned a lot. Thanks Red for all you do, hope this forum is around for a long time.

I appreciate the info but you're not the only person that knows how to tie knots. I tie a simple overhand knot in those webbing straps and I've been using them for many years and I've never had one pull apart but I do appreciate your concern.

Not sure what all has been going on here cuz I'm out hunting and I don't have time to read back through this thread..... all I will say is that sometimes your post come across a little arrogantly and you make a lot of assumptions. Perhaps before you decide to unload on someone on the internet, you might try reading them out loud first.. Same with trying to correct someone about tying a knot. In this case I know you were trying to help me.

Red thank you for emailing me the info.

My fault was caution and caring? Ok.
Noted.

I come across as arrogant? Ok. New policy. I won't open my mouth unless I'm specifically asked of my opinion.

I have seen gear failure and people fall to their death. Perhaps that level of rope sobriety is too much for this place. Its where I come from.

Red, feel free to delete all my content(first) and my user profile if that is the desire of the majority.

Im not trying to stir this up in anyway but just as a reminder to all. We are a community a family to some extent. While this site has fostered great designs and has evolved saddle hunting and so many guys & gals have contributed to this future. We all have been open to use anyone's designs freely. We as individuals conduct (or should be) safety assessments by continually testing and assessing those tests to come to some level of safety/peace of mind before heading to the field. Hunt safe, hunt hard, and have fun.

Lone Wolf Versa Button or XOP Fast Strap Button? Does it make any difference for weight or fit? Thanks!

Xop is strongest but metal, persinally i like the countersunk nylon lone wolf as it is quiet and the flat head stacks better.

Thanks Dave. Just ordered the LW Versa Buttons for the 6 hawk helium sticks I ordered yesterday. Now for the amsteel and stealth strips. I don't like changing things up in-season, but the single steps on the lone wolf are killing me.

I bought some of the xop buttons to try. They are much smaller than the lone wolf buttons and the xop bolt isn't long enough to fit through the stick. I put the lone wolfs on. I'm going to post a pic in the next day or 2 of how I got the bolts from the buttons to nest together without extra drilling.

I'll be watching out for it :)

This looks like a great additional tool to have in the tool box - a quiver of climbing methods.

lone wolf straps are temporary

note how from top to bottom the versa buttons go slightly to the left. 6 inches from the top on the first one, 6.25 on number 2 and 6.5 on number three. The way the sticks sit there is a little room for error with this.

Pretty sure this is how Ken and Dave are stacking their sticks? Correct me if I'm wrong.

look at the bolt from the stick on the bottom and how it is poking into the hole on the versa button above it (pics are upside down of reality)

Hope that helps guys, let me know if you have any more questions.

I see what ya did there red, indexed the buttons so the threaded portion of the stick above falls into one of the holes in the versa button below.

I may have more questions. Hawk Helium sticks are supposed to come tomorrow and I have a tracking # from lone wolf for Versa buttons. Gotta order the amsteel yet. I am thinking the 3/8. As of now, I am not sure if I will cut them down, and if so, to what length.

I want to try them OEM, then with Versa buttons and amsteel, then think about cutting them down or not.

Going to use them with the GW. Also, I got caught up in the sit drag craze, and now have one of those. I may putz around with it after the rut, but not before.

Thx!

Ah taking the scenic route. Gotta decide what works for you. I didn't even unwind the factory buckles before removing them. Lol. Just knew from Lw experience I didn't want metal buckles. Nothing wrong with leaving them full length, your just carrying extra weight per foot of height climbed(steps are too close together). Maybe you will come up with a new mod, have fun and keep us posted on likes/dislikes.

Scenic for sure! No hurry for me.

I am just shy of 6'. I am I am 275 lbs, more muscle than fat. My muscle does compensate somewhat for the fat (I workout consistently, but indulge the same).

Ideally, I would be the svelte ninja my mind thinks I am. Realistically, I have to work with where I am right now.

I will definitely keep the forum members posted, just so everyone knows I am not a svelte ninja deer slayer.

In case you haven't read it, amsteel is not recommended for tying knots (ie the rope mod). It is very slick. Dave is using on his sticks and loves it, but I just wanted to make you aware of this.

If you use amsteel splice a loop in one end -this one goes over versa button. Wrap it around the tree and then pass amsteel rope over top of versa button and then UNDER the amsteel rope going around tree. the I take two wraps around the versa and then throw in two hal hitches - done this way it will NOT slip are all - when weight is applied to the stick it compresses and locks the amseteel very much like a Jim Stepp knot. I have used just the compression with no wraps or half hitches on one stick to check cameras and it holds by itself (BUT I WOULD NEVER DO THIS ABOVE 5 FOOT). I have tried a lot of ropes and the 1/4" amsteel is perfect for this mod IMHO - I weight 220 and no slippage yet.
