Helium Stick Modification - a closer look

Muddy sticks are 18 inch between steps mine are 21-22 so i get an extra foot just there with three sticks. I like helium better but that is just a personal preference.

This is what I use, similar concept, slightly modified:

https://www.rogerssportinggoods.com/tre ... -pack.html

I like that they have 2 steps and how short they are. Fit onto my backpack well. I removed the buckles and the buckle connecting bracket (saves weight) and replaced with the versa button And rope (no buckle). Also removed the toothed mount that attaches to the tree and replaced with the v-bracket from my lone wolf steps. Obviously not cost efficient if you replace half the original hardware with Lone wolf hardware but I already had it. Much prefer these modified sticks over my lone-Wolf'ers.

Ok, so I finally got around to finishing this mod. The first ones I did last winter I ended up making way too short so they went into the parts/ strap on step pile. I have to say, this mod is the way to go for sticks (thanks @DaveT1963!). I finished the mod on Sunday night, and hunted it on Monday. For the moment I just have lone wolf straps on them because that is what I had, but I'm going to switch over to 8mm ultra tech eventually. I have them set up with a single foot loop right now, but I'm considering adding a double.

The one big difference I made was that I accidentally figured out how to avoid having to countersink for the bolts to seat into. I did a quick ratio based off the original dimensions and determined I wanted to put the versa button at 6.5 inches from the top. I accidentally put it at 6 on the first stick. So when setting up for the second stick I wanted to make it so that the bolt from that stick would not interfere with the versa button if I set it up to carry like Dave and Kenn are. I determined that I need to put it at 6.25 inches down. The third stick I put at 6.5 inches for the same reason. Well wouldn't you know it that if I moved the middle and top sticks up and stacked them so the tree brackets braced both the top and bottom of the stick below it, the bolt from the top sticks set right into the holes on the versa buttons on the sticks below them. It was so perfect it was meant to be. I wrapped them up with my DIY version of camo form and they were good to go. I'm so happy that I finally got to finish this project! :D

I'm not completely following but I like what I'm hearing. Can you post some pics? I have 16 hawk heliums on the way to outfit that I was planning to sink the versa button.

16? Dang your the hawk hoarder and G2 is a sit-drag hoarder. Lol

Red sounds like a goid upgrade... need picks I still have for sets that need modding

Yea I was trying to explain it well and I got a little wordy lol. I will take pics and post as soon as I get a chance.

I've got both sizes of ultratech on the way. I'm going to use it to rappel down with my spurs.

Dave,
Great video! I used some Ideas of yours on my helium stick. Thanks!

BUT!!!...
I wanted to bring it to your attention that the "water knot" you used and showed in the video to tie the ends of your green webbing steps together is not a water knot...its tied incorrectly. You simply tied an overhand knot with both lines. Its dangerous to load an overhand knot in that direction...it tries to pull the knot apart.
Heres how to tie a proper water knot...which is the strongest knot to join the ends of webbing.

Im not knocking you bro. Well done video and great job on modding the helium sticks. I just don't want you to take a chance on getting hurt.

Happy hunting,
Umbra

Ok great! Where are you going with that statement bud?
You posted a link for animated knots. He noted another mobile friendly alternative.

Slow your roll a bit. This is a friendly forum. We have open discussions in a friendly manner. We all love your input and a little sarcasm is fine, but there is no need for cyberbullying.

I use a similar app for droid called knots 3D. Allows you to spin the knots and view from different directions. I caught my 6 year old son using it and trying to tie knots. He said he was learning to tie knots for when he can swing from trees like like his dad does.

Bassboys post had nothing, absolutely NOTHING to do with your post to Dave. Your post to Dave was fine and I'm sure he will appreciate it. justsomedude posted another place to learn how to tie knots, the one that he uses that is an app instead of a link, and that is it. Where was he going with it? He was going with another option to learn, obviously one that he has had success with.

If you think you "kindly" asked him where he was going with it, you should re-read some of your posts from an outside perspective. Some of your comments are coming off very passive aggressive. Just because someone uses please and thank you, it doesn't make the content in between any different.

As I said previously, we are glad for the knowledge you are bringing to the table. If these problems are going to continue, maybe this isn't the best place for you. We have had ZERO problems in almost 3 years of this sites existence until the past week.

I have never ever had a problem on any forums Im on. SnipersHide.com- 10's of thousands strong, TNdeer.com and a host of others.
Put yourself in my shoes...as to the highly inflammatory stuff been dished my way after all the time I have already put into your forum.

I have zero problem with justsomedude
In fact he and I have had fine exchanges..and he taught me a lot and because of him Im tree climbing on just my etrier. Im very thankful.

I totally disagree with you about bassboy. He is the sole reason of this flair up. He chimed in, called me a cyberbully and had the nerve to think he was going to tell this Marine what to do. Umm-NOT gonna happen. He's not the boss here. And he was wrong and off base anyway. My opinion.

Further more...and Im not telling anyone what to do.(!)..its my opinion flair ups should be done in private message... So all members of the board are not drug through the crap. Bassboy should of had the cajones to address me personally and privately if he wanted to make assault.
But if Im publicly attacked I will publicly defend myself. I offer as humble suggestion you make it a rule that this kind of thing be dealt with privately so that innocent bystanders dont have to see the bs.

But alas Im good and done. To use a southern saying- Ive had a gut full of this place.
Im drawing a line in the sand.
If bassboy publicly apologizes to me for his public assault..wether he felt it appropriate or not...And if the sh*t storms dissapeer Im willing to give this place one more last chance.

I can take it or leave it. I got what I needed here to lighten my kit in a couple hours of first reading. Also Id be happy to continue to contribute, share my hard won knowledge and experience ,be part of the community, be a friend and especially continue to develop and enjoy certain specific new relationships that have been sparked here.
But I will be respected and shown respect. Especially publicly. Privately? As a defender of American freedoms I welcome and encourage folks to say anything they wish to me good, bad or ugly in private.

Its all up to bassboy.
And you Red.
Me, Im happy as a Lark.

I use the "Knots in 3D" iPhone app.

Dear JSD,
If you read any negative thing into my former reply to this post I send heart felt and real apology. It certainly was not intended.
Im very appeciative that through your posts and our exchanges I learned how to climb with just an aider and a tether. Thank you.
If I can help you or be of service please let me know.
Im sending a private message relating the same. Thanks pal.

No offense taken!

I am only good at knots I use on a regular basis.

When I need to make good knots the right way (especially life saving knots), I just refer to the phone app I mentioned.

FYI...it also has fishing and camping related knots.
