Sometimes it pays to just be in the right place at the right time. On the second day of rifle season (last Monday) I saw what I was sure was a buck pass between me and where my daughter was sitting but It was right at dark and I couldn't put horns on it. My daughter couldn't hunt today (husband had to work so she had to do stay with my granddaughter) so I went in and set up where I could watch as much as I could by myself. By 1:30 I had only seen one yearling doe so I rappelled down thinking I was going to relocate. I took a quick walk and the fresh sign in the area was still really good. Well, I thought, this is as good as any place else I may go so I decided to stick it out. Also, all but one of the deer we had seen were afternoon sightings. I relocated to tree approximately right over where I had seen the deer go up Monday. At 6:25 I could hear him walking but couldn't see him on the facing side hill. Eventually he wandered into view almost directly under the tree I had been in on Monday. I managed to get him in the scope, and wouldn't you know it, I could see the whole deer except to top of his heads as a cross branch was blocking it. He took another step and I saw he was a legal buck (APRs where I hunt) so I touched it off. It was 5:35 (shooting light ends at 5:45). He ran down the hill and heard him crash so I was pretty sure he was down and I knew pretty close to where. I rappelled down and just short cut over there. I honestly wasn't expecting to find a 10 point but I'll take him. The bad news is where I shot him is about as far from the nearest road as you can get in this area. Thanks to my buddy's who were hunting elsewhere and made the special trip in to help me drag him out (My old butt may still be out there otherwise
). I thought the first 300yds were gonna do me in. Plus, having help gave me the opportunity for pictures.
