My challenge to you

Epic fail, Red. I recently found a nice used (and painted) Tethrd Predator platform on an archery site for a very reasonable price. My TL EDP is my primary mobile platform and I like it a lot, but I also do some pre-set sticks on local private ground. My saddle hunting has been primarily oriented towards the afternoon, because of the potential noise and such in the dark for a morning approach. Now I have the option to pre-set a platform with the pre-set sticks to sneak in for a morning saddle hunt with mininmal fiddle factor. I'm trying to convince myself that is about all I "need".

This particular property I've been on for about years. There was a chunk of time in there where the deer population was down pretty good so I didn't hunt it that much and I was spending a lot more time on one of the park management properties I was on. I stopped doing the management hunts and have refocused on this area since it's close to home. The entire area is around 8000 acres but it's broken up. There are a couple larger segments that are probably 2-3k acres and then various other areas fill it in.
Do you ever get snow during the late season? Would you ever consider tracking a buck on snow? It’s probably my favorite late season tactic.

We do. I was thinking the other day about maybe trying that next year, maybe just to improve some skills. I wouldn't bother doing it with a bow though so I'd be limited to ML so I'd only have about 4 days I could do it during december. Our bow season comes back in January and we're allowed to sunday bow hunt so that right there increases my opportunities.

I think I’ll try I mean I won everything I needed at the meet up so let’s goooo ! Only thing that sux about Florida is not sure if I’ll get the wmas I want

Was out Saturday and Monday we got about 2 inches I back tracked a box toed single track on public near a creek crossing where I arrowed an 8 out of there a couple of years ago. I’m finding old log cuts in rougher terrain that I never notice before it’s where I’d be if I were a buck and found some singular bigger tracks. Also some legacy rubs. Followed an old roadway that crosses a steep creek and goes into a high stem count area and placed a marker for a saddle setup. This will be one of my spots when I’m trying to keep pressure out of my primary private I hunt. I’m just the opposite as your @redsquirrel, I have a harder time on early season “pattern” bucks and do better usually in November but I agree, once gun season is in they’re like woods wraiths everywhere I hunt. This is the soft maple I found to setup in. It overlooks that old logging road that comes up out of that ravine. The tree is at a point where the trail splits and they go south or north. I’m facing east in the photos with the tree close up.

Gotta love a good “toe dragger.”
Is that a young spruce or a hemlock next to your red maple preset tree? Setting up in a hardwood tucked into the top of a young conifer is a personal favorite!

Yes I believe it’s a Norway spruce there’s a gas well nearby I think it was a seedling offshoot from some reclamation plantings several years ago. A lot of native Hemlock in there too.

I think that Norway’s are gonna take the place
Of hemlock as they rapidly leave the landscape. It’s a real shame to see them go but I’m glad that there’s something coming along to create thermal cover in the winter.

When I was in CT I got off one morning after a 24 hr duty day with no sleep. Showered, changed clothes and hit the woods. It was in the teens and started snowing. The snow was making this weird miniature wind chime sound as it hit the tree limbs and was putting me to sleep. I crawled under a hemlock and went to sleep. When I woke up it had quit snowing but it was dark, lol. Burrowed out to find clear skies and moonlight so I made my way back to the truck. Cranked it up and the clock said 1:30

Anyway, today’s find was another nice spot for deer with a ton of sign, but this is what is drawing the most immediate attention…..

How long were you asleep?

Got off work @ 0730. Suspect I hit the woods around 0930 and was conscious for a few hours so I would say 12-13 hours. It was damned peaceful until see those limbs and the snow pushed them down and basically igloo’d me in, lol

I'm pretty jealous. Maybe it'll happen to me one day.
