Friction Hitches

@Horn

This is 5.5mm yacht line with 5300 lbs break strength
And there is also Bluewater titan cord with 3200 lbs break strength. Both have dyneema cores with heavy polyester covers and enough break strength that they should work with those tiny tethers you are using. Although you may want to add an extra wrap or two???? Since it’s only a mm difference. I haven’t found any 4mm line with high enough breaking strength.

@Brocky what are your thoughts on 5mm hitch cord on 6mm rope?
Not sure where I got it, but I’ve used .6 to .85 diameter of rope as the range for hitch cord, so it would fall at the higher end but in that range. Temp is the part that always worries me, esp. with smaller cord. I’m drawn to 5mm over the 4mm options I see.

Anyone consider utilizing the running-eye technique on a tether and then doubling the tether tag end back onto itself with a Blake's Hitch. Carabiner from bridge to the formed loop. Should be somewhat adjustable too...

I have 5mm titan, beal back up 5mm, the 5.5 Kevlar stuff EWO sells, just ordered that 4mm poly/sk78, v-12 technora and t-100. Currently using the v-12 and t-100. I'm not sure I tried the 5/5.5 options but the 6mm I'm using is pretty stiff. I don't think that the titan or Kevlar would grab well as they're pretty stiff as well but I can try them. V-12 is my preference right now but the t-100 is fine and seems easier to source right now.

Have seen some 4mm options with a poly/aramid cover but they have dyneema cores, so not sure if it would really address the issue

whats your impression of Beal backup 5mm for hitch cord?

I’ve done it before with oplux. Because of the hitch and the alpine butterfly (or whichever midline knot you choose) it limits the distance on adjustability you’d have but it isn’t too terribly different overall. It doesn’t work well (or at all) with ropes like HTP, protac, or other stiffer ropes though.

The coppa 5000 is very flexible and a softer cover, so it should grab better than the Beal or the titan cord

I'm looking at getting more V-12. I don't recall specifics but that's the one I picked for my main tether over t-100 ( which is fine, too). It is flatter than most cords I have experience with, I think this helps it grab but I also think it makes it harder to break free. Not impossible or anything but takes some effort.

Could I add in small round cordage in the center and use the v-12 like a sheath? I actually think part of the reason it's hard to break is because it's such small profile to push on/ grab. Thinking that maybe a little core might help? Strength of the my "core" shouldn't matter since the v-12 is all good on its own, right? Mostly thinking I'll need something pretty small, thus weak

I can’t answer that. I just know that Sterling says not to use the hollow cord that’s used for a autoblock for a primary life support. I believe it has something to do with the cord flattening out. Maybe Brocky will have further insight.

West marine is stating the 7mm break strength of the Coppa 5000, the 5mm is actually 3086, still plenty strong enough. The Coppa is slightly smaller than the 6mm DyTech, I didn’t think it would grab, but the bumpy cover, which I made looser also, worked great.

I wondered about doing the same, added core wouldn’t weaken it, it just expands some. Or you can put a wooden piece of wood above the hitch to assist.

@Brocky what are your thoughts on 5mm hitch cord on 6mm rope?

I’m by no means Brocky … but I’ve been using a 6mm Excel Racing Dinghy as a bridge and tether with 4-3-3 WRL Hitches of 5mm Beal BUL. These ropes/hitches play together very nicely.

Also interested to try that 5mm coppa and the 5mm Excel Racing Dinghy for hitch cords on the 6mm.

I bought some of the 7mm coppa and the 5mm to experiment with as a bridge and they worked very well together also.
I tried the 6mm dingy cord also but I liked the coppa’s cover and flexibility a little better

@redsquirrel is there somewhere we could put a sticky thread that’s just how to tie hitches and nothing else? Not that you can’t find most anything searching but it would be cool to have all the knots in one place.
He gave us a sticky thread for 2TC videos. Maybe he would do the same for a Friction Hitches thread. Let only @Brocky update it.

Do you want this as a sticky? Or if Brocky volunteered to create one that he posted I could clean it up and then lock it. It would be too hard to create a thread where only he can post to but we can figure something out.
