I tried a sitdrag this spring and summer and never liked it. I switched to a fleece saddle and also modified a Summit Viper seat, both of which worked much better and were going to my options all fall. Today just for fun, after seeing a thread on here about the Pulpit, I cut and made my own preacher seat and used an aluminium angle for the standoff instead of a wooden whale tail. I went hunting an hour later without even fully testing it (used RCH so was safe) and hunted for 2+ hrs with zero issues or discomfort. No desire for anything else beyond this one now! 3/4" plywood, 21" W x 10" D, standoff sticks out 11", 30" bridge. It likely weighs a couple of pounds more than the sitdrag for comparison, but the comfort is by far better for me. I only use an xbow and do not have to work around the tree as much as others since I can shoot right or left handed at will, but can lean and move around the tree if needed with it just fine. This is a super fast and easy option for anyone on the fence about saddle hunting and should be the first thing you try in my opinion to see if you like this affliction.

Awesome for you! I use a GW and/or sitdrag and a crossbow AND shoot left or right handed while hunting. It is something how little one has to move left/right to have a shot if one can shoot either right or left handed with a crossbow.

I have practiced left and right handed shooting with the GW out to 30 yards. For me, it is a non-issue.

The only thing I can add is I use a crossbow marketed to youth/women. It is smaller and easier to not interfere when shooting from saddle type stands.

My preference is the GW for comfort. The sit drag during early season. Pulpit seems similar to GW.

Good stuff here!

I shoot a Mission MXB 320 that is also very small and maneuverable. Btw, to anyone reading this thread, I am not knocking the other options, just sharing what worked well for me and trying to give someone thinking about doing this something cheap and fast to try out to start with.

If i didn’t already have a GW, I would have done what you did!

Just using tubular webbing through a slot in the board with water knots. Knot on top, web going down through slot and up the side of the board to prevent bridge pinch. I sit on the board and had no discomfort, but am an avid mtn biker so my sit bones can take it without padding. Still a work in progress, but worked for first hunt without testing.

@Bwhana so glad that you like it! I agree with you on comfort. The pulpit in conjunction with a RCH is the way to go IMO. @Letemgrowitllshow I tried putting padding on mine but it just didn't work the way I liked it. I eventually put some pipe insulation on the back edge were the main part of my rear end was sitting.

I have used a tactical belt as a back band with mine. It depends on the person's wants. I do not always use one with it. I recently made and have been using a fleece saddle. Working on some ideas to combine the fleece with a semi flexible insert between my fleece layers to hold a tree offset like the preacher seat. Will be best of 2 worlds if it pans out!

Sounds awesome! Let us know how it goes

I find it amusing that @Bwhana went from SitDrag to Preacher Seat to Wraith... what a journey! :D

By the way, might throw together a "ground/basement" Wraith (aka not rated for height) today, thanks for that.

And just for @ImThere's sake, that Sitdrag sucked :)
My sit drag never becomes uncomfortable when I am in a tree. I tried the fleece saddle and had some hip pinch which I had to work out by adjusting the fleece. I sat in an arborist saddle with a board built into the leg loops. My butt was sore after a few hours but I'm not a mountain biker. :D

Good callout, I spend lots of time on my mtb, so my sit bones can tolerate the board better than most.

I wasn't complaining. I was thinking how many people here have different experiences with nearly the same setup. I have felt something was unworkable but after a little practice it became extremely workable. I am pretty sure I will cut out a board and try the preacher's seat this spring. Thanks for the idea. I could sew the fleece to the preacher' seat and have a fleece and board saddle in one. :D Fleece is good padding.

Another awesome DIY project. Love the simplicity of your builds.

@bj139 you are one quirky dude! You are always combining stuff in the strangest ways. The Frankenstein of saddle hunter for sure! Always interesting to see what contraption you come up with next.

Been messing around with a preacher seat type set up. Made an envelope with pack cloth and an insert...similar to the old tree suit. For the insert/seat used a folded up coriplast yard sign. Works well in terms of support with just a bit of “give”. Plus weighs next to nothing....lord knows there will be plenty of them signs available this year. Will follow with some pics if any interest.
