Why is it unethical to shoot a deer at 50 yards with a bow?

If the answer is “the odds of wounding or painful death are high compared to closer distances, so it’s unethical.”

Do I really need to play connect the dots from there to see how silly that argument is?
Never mind

I want to draw a Venn diagram of people who can shoot well enough to sight a bow in at 50 yards, people who shoot at deer at 50byards, and people who don’t know that posting about wounding one at 50 yards on a hunting forum will get them burned at the internet stake.

There would be zero people in that sweet spot.

Which means the odds that burning this fella will somehow make a light bulb go off in his head, and somehow correct course to what the torch bearers deem acceptable, are also pretty much zero.

The moral argument, and the internet implementation of it, says more about the lack of understanding of big numbers of those who use it, than it does any character shortcomings of our OP.

I would hope we stop arguing about the distance at this point. If you are not comfortable shooting any distance do not do it. My failure was not the distance it was my decision to release the arrow and not the situation to do so. Patience failure.
Still don't get it. To get it would require self examination and that would cause pain and deprive of pleasure.

People can say what they want. I posted as an unsuccessful hunt and those who want to continue to pursue ethicality and morals while sitting here judging based off no knowledge outside the brief objective data within this post will not change how or what I do in life. My lessons are for me to learn and experience.

I will continue to harvest deer at whatever yardage I deem acceptable when the shot decision is made under the appropriate circumstances. I train all year for this. I'm not you and you are not me. I do not know you and you do not know me. Only one has the ability to judge us and its no one on this forum.

I've made a bad decision and it stands as a bad decision.

When saying something and saying nothing have the same result, which is better?

Sorry you lost him.
You can tell archery guys and non archery guys
And those that don’t hunt out west. Lot of the 20 and under guys would eat tag soup year after year out west. Even the “best” hunters
Awesome how guys jumped on a beat you down after you lost a great buck. I’m sure they woke up with their chest stuck out this morning. Keyboard still smoking.

I haven't commented on the original post positively or negatively. We've all made bad shots, chose poorly etc. It is what it is. But I take exception to the long held belief that just because a bowhunter is west of a mystical longitude then they must take longer shots. I no longer live in the west but I spent 25 years there and managed to fill a great many tags with my recurve at mostly under 20 yards.
I still get to Wyoming to hunt antelope with a group that finds a way to kill 8 to 12 goats at ranges of 5 to 25 yards.
I'm not trying to pick on you, just pointing out the fallacy of this old tired trope.

I forget exactly what I’ve said on this thread if you took one of my comments as an attack or judgment on you that was never my intention and I do not presume to judge you. Hopefully your next opportunity will be successful.
